The 17th Cavalry Regiment, a storied unit within the U.S. Army, originated during the Pancho Villa Expedition. Constituted on July 1, 1916, at Fort Bliss, Texas, it was initially inactivated on September 26, 1921, at the Presidio of Monterey, California. Once part of the 1950s Combat Arms Regimental System, it was reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System to preserve its history and lineage. Today, elements of the 17th Cavalry Regiment are integrated into combat aviation brigades as attack/recon helicopter squadrons, continuing the regiment's legacy.
