Between December 17 and 20, 1941, fourteen Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses that had survived the Battle of the Philippines departed Mindanao for Darwin, Australia. These were the only aircraft from the Far East Air Force (FEAF) to make it out. Following their evacuation from the Philippines on December 24, 1941, FEAF headquarters relocated to Australia. On February 5, 1942, the FEAF was reorganized and redesignated as the 5th Air Force, with the majority of its combat aircraft stationed at various fields on Java.
