The 87th FIS operated McDonnell F-101B Voodoo interceptors and F-101F trainers in 1960. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, it dispersed one-third of its force with nuclear-tipped missiles to Clinton County AFB, returning after the crisis. In 1968, the squadron moved to Duluth International Airport, Minnesota, upgrading to Convair F-106 Delta Darts, and was known for cold-weather operations. Relocated to K.I. Sawyer AFB, Michigan in 1971, the squadron was inactivated in 1985 due to budget cuts preventing its transition to the F-15 Eagle.
