The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is an American two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather supersonic jet initially developed for the U.S. Navy. Entering service in 1961, it was later adopted by the Marine Corps and Air Force, becoming a key Cold War combat aircraft. Production lasted from 1958 to 1981, with 5,195 units built, making it the most produced American supersonic military aircraft.

Capable of speeds over Mach 2.2, the Phantom could carry 18,000 pounds of weapons, including missiles and bombs, across nine external hardpoints. Although initially lacking an internal cannon, later versions included an M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. The F-4 set 15 world records for in-flight performance starting in 1959, including speed and altitude records.
