Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO EIGHT (HSC-28) was established as Helicopter Combat Support Squadron EIGHT (HC-8) on 3 December 1984, with four H-46Ds and 60 officers and enlisted personnel. It was redesignated a Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) on 1 April 2005. Squadron aircraft and personnel deploy on a “team concept” as a sea going detachment consisting of 4-10 pilots, 20-45 enlisted members, one maintenance officer and 1-3 MH-60S Knight Hawk helicopters.
