VP-47 has a rich history, beginning as Patrol Squadron 27 (VP-27) on 1 June 1944. It was rebranded as Patrol Bombing Squadron 27 (VPB-27) on 1 October 1944, reverted to Patrol Squadron 27 (VP-27) on 15 May 1946, and became Medium Patrol Squadron (Seaplane) 7 (VP-MS-7) on 15 November 1946. The squadron received its current designation, Patrol Squadron 47 (VP-47), on 1 September 1948.
